OUR STORY
Upper Seneca Baptist Church was the first Baptist congregation in Montgomery County and the fourth in the state of Maryland—church began in 1797. The congregation was established by a covenant signed by 38 Christians on June 28, 1805. Initially they worshipped in a log cabin known as White Oak Chapel on Watkins Road. Oliver Talmadge Watkins and his wife, Eleanor Jane (Brewer), donated a one-acre parcel of land and William Henry Hobbs built the white, wood frame church building.
When the church membership grew to 454 members, they deemed it necessary to build a larger church building. The brick church located at 23401 Davis Mill Road, Germantown, Maryland, was built and dedicated “For the Glory of God” in 1990. The church is still thriving and is very fortunate to be a dynamic spiritual organism empowered by the Holy Spirit to share Christ with as many people as possible in our church, community, and throughout the world.
